 Boat Naming Made Simple

E AHO LAULA
The name of our Wharram-design Ariki 45' catamaran is E AHO LAULA... from the Pontiac Grand Am commercial, it means "Wider is Better" in Hawaiian (I looked it up, and it's pronounced "ay ah-hoe la-oola"). Boat is designed in best Polynesian style, so she had to have a name to match.

And of course it's true... wider IS better...smoother... FASTER! Sea ya,

ON TO FORTUNE
We have a 37' sailboat we've named ' On to Fortune '. The name comes from a Shakespearean quote.
There is a tide in the affairs of men,
     Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the days of their life
     Lie in shallows and misery.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current as
it serves Or lose our ventures.
This sums up exactly how we felt about buying our boat now rather than waiting until we retire. We bought the boat three years ago and this past winter we cruised as a family (husband, wife, 12 year old son and dog) from Philadelphia south down the ICW to Miami, across to Bahamas where we spent four months and home again. It's a wonderful life, don't wait to try it!

HAKUNA MATATA
Our 14' runabout turned into a 2859 (29') Bayliner. We had nothing but problems for the first month, including during the delivery. This boat was slammed into a seawall by the delivery tech (he got caught by a strong gust), then he shattered the prop on a rock no one had ever hit before!!! Next came small leaks here and there, and lots of water in the mid-berth, soaking the mattress beyond use. Next came a terrible vibration, which caused the engine to be removed and a new Gimbal gear put in the out-drive. Once all the bugs were worked out over the first month of ownership, and lots of yelling at the salespersons, she ran beautifully, and had no more problems. We wanted to give her a name to fit her rough start, hence HAKUNA MATATA, from The Lion King, which means " NO MORE WORRIES!" Since we have named her with this name, we've had no more problems and now love having a great cabin cruiser!

WHITE HOLE
I have a 1965 19' Grady White Pacific that my dad had restored 10 years ago. Now although the boat is beautifully restored I still had my doughts about the old wood boat. It took me quite some time to get use to the small hook that had formed in the hull over the years, and of course my dad never got it over one mile an hour he simply responded" the boat went ok for me".

Any way the boat is painted with white emmeron and really shines... but it still has its problems. Upon putting it in the water it needed a cool grand worth of things. You know stuff you buy and cant quite recall. Then every week after that for two or was it three months it ate two or mabey ya it was three hundred dollar a week. Now dont forget the boat is only 19' and in excelect condition. So looking back I still dont know where it went or what I spent it on. Know it really happened the boat up till know never broke down...... Till the problem. Out on Long Island sound one day a very large boat with of course a wake to match could not recall the law. And there for cut across my bow rather suddently causing me and my poor 32 year old boat ( which is buy the way five years older than I ) to become well airborn. When we both hit the water i grabed the radio and the phone because we were sinking. I had broken a seam on my port bow. THANK GOD my anal father over did everything. The two rather large bilge pumps kept us dry enough to make it home. Now to make a very long story short, the name of my money eating friend is the WHITE HOLE. I really dont think i need to explain. Thank you for letting me vent since this only happened last weekend. But the good news I am currently reparing the broken lap and we will be back on the water in two weeks. Hope at the least you find my story some what interesting and if not well then feel sorry for me.

DEBT RECKONING
It's got a couple of meanings, it's kind of a take on the navigation term "dead reckoning" and I probably spent a little more than I can afford so I am reckoning on having a lot of debt.

POSITIVE WAVES
my baots name is positive waves. its a 76 19 ' with a 302 v8 . it took me 6 years to restore it .a lot of setbacks hard to get parts and some mistakes.she looks and runs greats now.it took a lot of positive waves.

THE STEAM LAUNCH GUERNSEY ISLE
I have a 26' steamboat named The Steam Launch Guernsey Isle. This boat is on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. It is named for the family camp which is on Guernsey Cow Island. This island is the site where some of the first Guernsey cattle were kept in the USA. Our camp has been there since 1949. My father built this steamboat from a 1910 Fay & Bowen hull and a compound engine he built. He completed this boat in 1989 when he was 80. His first steamboat was named the Cow Island Belle.

LADY LOVE III
I named my boat LADY LOVE III because I used to be a photographer for PlayBoy, and photographed LOU RALLS, I named the boat after his song lady love, I will send you a picture next time.
