 Boat Naming Made Simple

AD LIB
Well, I usually tend to do things the way I feel good and I like. Hence"ad lib"(short for latin ad libitum) - meaning roughly"according to my own mind"is just the thing I wanted. Even if the boat is only a 22 footer there is a vast area to explore here at lake Saimaa in Finland. And I'll do it ad lib !

STRAY CAT
  • We like cats. Our cats were all rescued from the local shelter (strays)
  • We enjoy the Rockabilly band from the 80's
  • The boat looked pretty scruffy when we rescued it. (it looks great now)
  • OBE JUAN
The boat name was 'Obe Juan' and the sailboat was a San Juan 23. The boat was named during the height of Starwars fame and was a play on the central mythic character of Ben Knoebe, a Jedi knight, who was governed by ' The Force' and who chose good over evil. Ben Knoebe was referred to as Obe Juan (spelling not known). Our dinghy then became 'Luke' the young Jedi warrior, who was a wannabe. Eventually Luke does become a Knight, our optimist pram never became a San Juan"8".

    DARGO
The boat is called Dargo. Built in the 1950's, it was named after the original trading boats that plied the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia. Length 34ft, Beam 10ft 6in and made entirely from Spotted Gum, a local hardwood. Originally 1 of 26 Bull's Cruisers made for the Hire Boat Fleet. When I purchased the craft 5 years ago it had the name GAFIA (Get Away From It All). Researching it's history after I purchased it, I found the original name was Dargo. Pretty amazing considering my surname Dargie.

    TRACIE
Looking for a name for our new boat, we just sold a 210 CC Sea Ray. She was the Tray-Sea, pronounced Tracie after my wife, the spelling came from the Sea Ray. My good friends named their 54' Bluewater the Laura Elizabeth after their daughter, who was named after a Missippi tow boat.

    TRAFFIC JAM
After years of searching for just the right boat for my needs , I bought a 1976 28' Cargile Cutter equipted with a Perkins diesel. On the day that I bought the the boat I also talked couple of friends of mine one with a chevy suburban into giving me a hand towing it the 50 or so miles from Kissimee back to Daytona thru Orlando and thats where the fun begins. An 18 wheeler passes us then pulls directly in front of us, the bow of the boat began bouncing around in the wash from the truck, the next thing you know we're jackknifed blocking 2 of 3 lanes of interstate 4 in downtown Olando. We backed up traffic all the way to disney on a 98 degree august day needless to say we were not real popular. 8 hours and some $400 (wrecker fees) later we had to abandon the boat in the median. 2 days later with the assistance of the police (to close I4 again) and a large crane (to lift the boat on to a new trailer) we retrieved the boat. Hence the name "TRAFFIC JAM". You had to be there...
