After seeing Wallace Shawn’s performance in My Dinner with Andre , casting director Janet Hirshenson was so fond of his delivery of the word “inconceivable!” that she cast him as Vizzini in The Princess Bride. The movie is based on a book being read throughout the movie. The idea was to pick up on the story book element with the capital “I” being the first letter of the first word at the beginning of a chapter symbolizing a new chapter for this crew. Oh the stories they will have to tell!
Pen and ink style drop cap, traditionally hand printed by a calligrapher/scribe. These were generally square in shape and marked the beginning of a chapter. Ive used the second example from below with a more defined box and inner circle.
Lighthouses fit well into the shap of a capital I and here, like #1 beside a handwritten typestyle we might find in an old manuscript.
My original idea with better flourishes, surrounded by the traditional square bounding area. The rest of the type is more modern. This would be a printed product with a soft shadow to set it of like it floating on the surface of the hull.
